SUMMARY:IC2-GC3 Webinar: 5 Things You Can Do to Select Safer Chemicals for Your Company's Product Formulations
DESCRIPTION:Many consumer products brands are implementing innovative steps to manage chemicals in product development and sourcing. These new steps allow you to better understand the human and environmental health characteristics of chemicals present in products and processes. Chemical list screening (regulatory\, preferred\, etc.) can be a useful first step toward flagging problematic or preferred chemicals. But what about chemicals not on lists? How do companies efficiently compare ingredients or formulations to select safer alternatives? \nIn this webinar\, Joe Rinkevich\, the President of Scivera\, presented examples of specific steps companies are taking to objectively compare chemicals and formulations to measure\, improve\, and track selection and use of safer alternatives. These strategies\, when implemented by brands and anticipated by chemical suppliers\, can assist all participants in the consumer products supply chain in finding and selecting preferred chemicals. \nScivera provides software solutions for consumer products brands and their suppliers to make more informed and safer chemicals decisions. Joe Rinkevich leads product development and customer relationships for Scivera drawing on over 20 years of professional experience in the industry. Throughout his career\, Joe has led successful startups and consulted to senior executives on how their business can generate lasting value by integrating environmental and sustainability strategy in all aspects of the enterprise. Without exception\, this work has uncovered the need to empower professionals across many organizational functions with the reliable\, cost-effective resources to make proactive decisions about product improvement\, supplier relationships and product life cycle development. In addition to having worked with a range of corporations like Dell\, Nike\, Walmart\, General Motors and DuPont\, Joe also supports government and intergovernmental efforts on environment and sustainability as well as speaking and teaching at several universities and annual conferences. \n \nDownload the Slides [PDF]

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Paper-making 101: Fluorinated chemicals in fiber-based food packaging
DESCRIPTION:The use of fluorinated chemicals as a grease and moisture barrier in food packaging has raised concerns about another potential route of human exposure to PFAS. On Tuesday\, October 24\, 2017\, Zack Leimkuehler of Expera Specialty Solutions presented a “Paper-making 101” webinar. Zack described the paper-making process generally and discussed some of the sustainability issues and trade-offs Expera faced as they developed an array of paper products\, including PFAS-free\, unbleached\, FSC-certified\, and post-consumer recycled fiber. Zack also explained the difference between molded fiber products and paper products and described the links in the supply chain—from material sourcing to finished consumer product.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Automotive Chemical Management and the IMDS
DESCRIPTION:James Lundström\, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Volvo Car Corporation\, described the evolution and use of the worldwide automobile industry’s shared material data system\, the International Material Data System (IMDS). \nThe IMDS was originally a joint development of Audi\, BMW\, Daimler\, HPE\, Ford\, Opel\, Porsche\, VW\, and Volvo. Additional manufacturers have since joined the community\, and IMDS has become a global standard used by almost all of the global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In the IMDS\, all materials used for automobile manufacturing are collected\, maintained\, analysed\, and archived. Using the IMDS\, it is possible to meet the obligations placed on automobile manufacturers\, and thus on their suppliers\, by national and international standards\, laws\, and regulations.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Walmart and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) on Chemical Ingredient Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Retailers need detailed information to handle chemical products safely in accordance with various regulations promulgated by federal agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)\, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)\, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\, as well as similar regulations promulgated by various agencies at a state level. The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) led a multi-stakeholder project to develop GS1 data standards for regulatory attributes of formulated products. In this webinar\, Sue Pifer\, RILA’s Vice President of Compliance\, provided an overview of the project from inception to the current pilot\, including the challenges from a project management perspective—for example\, building a data map to clarify the roles and responsibilities for the envisioned data streams. In addition\, Ashley C. Hall\, Senior Manager of Sustainability for Walmart Stores Inc.\, provided an overview of the process Walmart uses to manage information with UL/Wercs and monitor progress on high priority chemical reduction. Walmart’s policy on sustainable chemistry in consumables\, launched in 2013\, seeks to remove substances of high concern from goods such as personal care\, paper\, cleaning\, pet\, and baby products. The policy also addresses transparency and disclosure as well as a commitment to the U.S. EPA Safer Choice program for Walmart’s private brand products.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling
DESCRIPTION:The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements\, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling\, transport\, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: \n\nDefining health\, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;\nCreating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and\nCommunicating hazard information\, as well as protective measures\, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).\n\nThe GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national\, regional\, and worldwide level. \nGovernments\, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However\, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted. \nThis IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS\, covering its purpose\, and content. To participate in the Webinar\, you need to pre-register using the online registration form.
