Wilson\, CIH\, Industrial Hygienist\, OSHA Region II Office\nAmy has been an Industrial Hygienist with OSHA for nearly 13 years\, beginning as a Compliance Officer in the Manhattan Area Office before taking a position with the Regional Office in the Federal Enforcement Operations section. In her current position\, Amy’s responsibilities include coordinating the Region’s Process Safety Management and Hazard Communication programs. She is also a member of OSHA’s Specialized Response Team\, representing the agency in emergency response operations nation-wide. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Ted Schettler\, Science Director of the Science and Environmental Health Network\, conducted the following presentation on toxic chemicals and their potential impacts on human health throughout their lifespan. Dr. Schettler serves as Science Director of the Collaborative on Health and Environment and Science Advisor to the Health Care without Harm campaign. He has a medical degree from Case Western Reserve University and a Masters in public health from Harvard University. He is co-author of “Generations at Risk: Reproductive Health and the Environment;” “In Harm’s Way: Toxic Threats to Child Development;” and “Environmental Threats to Healthy Aging.” He has published a number of articles on related topics in peer-reviewed journals and has served on advisory committees of the U.S. EPA and National Academy of Sciences. \nA copy of the Webinar Presentation is available for download here. SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling
DESCRIPTION:The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements\, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling\, transport\, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: \n\nDefining health\, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;\nCreating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and\nCommunicating hazard information\, as well as protective measures\, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).\n\nThe GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national\, regional\, and worldwide level. \nGovernments\, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However\, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted. \nThis IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS\, covering its purpose\, and content.
