SUMMARY:WE ACT for Environmental Justice - Beauty Justice Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Recording of the WE ACT for Environmental Justice Beauty Justice Presentation. Presenters: Mae Kennedy and Danielle Mangabat. 04.14.2025 \nWE ACT for Environmental Justice is a leading voice in the environmental justice movement\, working to end environmental racism and ensure a healthy\, just\, and equitable environment for all. Danielle Mangabat and Mae Kennedy presented on WE ACT’s work at large\, their efforts in the toxics/beauty justice space\, and how they’ve learned to engage meaningfully with Uptown NYC communities. \nIn 2019\, WE ACT expanded their focus on beauty justice by exploring the impact of toxic chemicals in personal care products\, particularly those marketed to women and femme-identifying individuals of color. Many of these products contain harmful substances like formaldehyde\, PFAS\, and mercury\, posing serious health risks and reinforce Eurocentric beauty standards. Through community-based participatory research and advocacy at the state and international levels\, WE ACT works to advance the beauty justice movement to protect public health and challenge systemic inequities in the beauty industry. \nPlease log in for the recording.

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice Mapping Tools Presentation by & for IC2 Members
DESCRIPTION:For those interested in evaluating Environmental Justice (EJ) concerns at the community or regional level\, EPA provides a mapping and data analysis tool called the Environmental Justice Screening and Mapping Tool\, or EJSCREEN. EJSCREEN enables risk assessors\, regulators\, and communities to geographically analyze data pertaining to EJ. It allows the combination of socioeconomic and demographic data with environmental data (including land\, water\, and air). EJSCREEN itself presents no new data\, but rather facilitates the analysis of existing data in a user-friendly format. Chris Greene\, Environmental Scientist at the Minnesota Department of Health Contaminants of Emerging Concern program\, will give an overview and demonstration of EJSCREEN\, and discuss some of its strengths\, limitations\, and possible applications for practitioners interested in evaluating EJ concerns. \nIn 2021\, Environmental Justice (EJ) was codified into Massachusetts state law.  The statute defined EJ principles and populations in the Commonwealth and directed state agencies in the Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) to develop key agency actions and strategies to ensure that all residents can benefit in an equitable and just manner from the laws and policies addressing environmental\, energy\, and climate issues in Massachusetts.  Kari Sasportas\, Outreach & Policy Analyst at the Massachusetts Office of Technical Assistance (OTA)\, will demonstrate examples of mapping tools that OTA uses to help companies identify their facilities in relation to EJ communities and assist these companies in reducing their use of toxic chemicals and their impact on EJ communities. \nPlease log in for the recording

SUMMARY:IC2-GC3 Webinar: 5 Things You Can Do to Select Safer Chemicals for Your Company's Product Formulations
DESCRIPTION:Many consumer products brands are implementing innovative steps to manage chemicals in product development and sourcing. These new steps allow you to better understand the human and environmental health characteristics of chemicals present in products and processes. Chemical list screening (regulatory\, preferred\, etc.) can be a useful first step toward flagging problematic or preferred chemicals. But what about chemicals not on lists? How do companies efficiently compare ingredients or formulations to select safer alternatives? \nIn this webinar\, Joe Rinkevich\, the President of Scivera\, presented examples of specific steps companies are taking to objectively compare chemicals and formulations to measure\, improve\, and track selection and use of safer alternatives. These strategies\, when implemented by brands and anticipated by chemical suppliers\, can assist all participants in the consumer products supply chain in finding and selecting preferred chemicals. \nScivera provides software solutions for consumer products brands and their suppliers to make more informed and safer chemicals decisions. Joe Rinkevich leads product development and customer relationships for Scivera drawing on over 20 years of professional experience in the industry. Throughout his career\, Joe has led successful startups and consulted to senior executives on how their business can generate lasting value by integrating environmental and sustainability strategy in all aspects of the enterprise. Without exception\, this work has uncovered the need to empower professionals across many organizational functions with the reliable\, cost-effective resources to make proactive decisions about product improvement\, supplier relationships and product life cycle development. SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Walmart and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) on Chemical Ingredient Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Retailers need detailed information to handle chemical products safely in accordance with various regulations promulgated by federal agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)\, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)\, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\, as well as similar regulations promulgated by various agencies at a state level. The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) led a multi-stakeholder project to develop GS1 data standards for regulatory attributes of formulated products. In this webinar\, Sue Pifer\, RILA’s Vice President of Compliance\, provided an overview of the project from inception to the current pilot\, including the challenges from a project management perspective—for example\, building a data map to clarify the roles and responsibilities for the envisioned data streams. In addition\, Ashley C. Hall\, Senior Manager of Sustainability for Walmart Stores Inc.\, provided an overview of the process Walmart uses to manage information with UL/Wercs and monitor progress on high priority chemical reduction. Walmart’s policy on sustainable chemistry in consumables\, launched in 2013\, seeks to remove substances of high concern from goods such as personal care\, paper\, cleaning\, pet\, and baby products. The policy also addresses transparency and disclosure as well as a commitment to the U.S. EPA Safer Choice program for Walmart’s private brand products.
