SUMMARY:IC2-GC3 Webinar: 5 Things You Can Do to Select Safer Chemicals for Your Company's Product Formulations
DESCRIPTION:Many consumer products brands are implementing innovative steps to manage chemicals in product development and sourcing. These new steps allow you to better understand the human and environmental health characteristics of chemicals present in products and processes. Chemical list screening (regulatory\, preferred\, etc.) can be a useful first step toward flagging problematic or preferred chemicals. But what about chemicals not on lists? How do companies efficiently compare ingredients or formulations to select safer alternatives? \nIn this webinar\, Joe Rinkevich\, the President of Scivera\, presented examples of specific steps companies are taking to objectively compare chemicals and formulations to measure\, improve\, and track selection and use of safer alternatives. These strategies\, when implemented by brands and anticipated by chemical suppliers\, can assist all participants in the consumer products supply chain in finding and selecting preferred chemicals. \nScivera provides software solutions for consumer products brands and their suppliers to make more informed and safer chemicals decisions. Joe Rinkevich leads product development and customer relationships for Scivera drawing on over 20 years of professional experience in the industry. Throughout his career\, Joe has led successful startups and consulted to senior executives on how their business can generate lasting value by integrating environmental and sustainability strategy in all aspects of the enterprise. Without exception\, this work has uncovered the need to empower professionals across many organizational functions with the reliable\, cost-effective resources to make proactive decisions about product improvement\, supplier relationships and product life cycle development. In addition to having worked with a range of corporations like Dell\, Nike\, Walmart\, General Motors and DuPont\, Joe also supports government and intergovernmental efforts on environment and sustainability as well as speaking and teaching at several universities and annual conferences. \n \nDownload the Slides [PDF]

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Evaluation of the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide
DESCRIPTION:In January 2014\, the IC2 published the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide (the Guide) to assist member states in conducting alternatives assessments. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Guide\, the IC2 initiated a project to conduct alternatives assessments using the three frameworks described in the Guide. Using data provided by the U.S. EPA and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control on alternatives to copper boat paint\, a contractor created a uniform data set evaluating hazard\, performance\, cost and availability\, and exposure for several alternatives to copper boat paint. This data set was used to conduct three\, independent alternatives assessments using each of the frameworks described in the Guide. The objective of this exercise\, however\, was to evaluate the Guide and not to conduct an alternatives assessment of copper boat paint. In this webinar\, Dr. Alex Stone (Washington State Department of Ecology) and Dr. Margaret Whittaker (ToxServices LLC) presented the results of this evaluation project and described recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the Guide and the ability of users to conduct an alternatives assessment. \nWebinar Recording
