SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Evaluating Product Performance during Alternatives Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Evaluating the performance of potential alternatives\, whether drop-in chemical substitutes or changes in product design\, can present a significant challenge to alternatives assessors in terms of time\, money\, and resources. In this webinar\, three experts—Alex Stone\, Safer Chemical Alternatives Chemist at the Washington Department of Ecology’s Hazardous Waste & Toxics Reduction program; Jason Marshall\, Cleaning Lab Director at the Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI); and Gregory Morose\, TURI’s Research Manager and a Research Professor at the College of Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts\, Lowell—discussed this challenge and presented three possible approaches: literature review\, laboratory testing\, and industry collaboration.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Automotive Chemical Management and the IMDS
DESCRIPTION:James Lundström\, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Volvo Car Corporation\, described the evolution and use of the worldwide automobile industry’s shared material data system\, the International Material Data System (IMDS). \nThe IMDS was originally a joint development of Audi\, BMW\, Daimler\, HPE\, Ford\, Opel\, Porsche\, VW\, and Volvo. Additional manufacturers have since joined the community\, and IMDS has become a global standard used by almost all of the global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). In the IMDS\, all materials used for automobile manufacturing are collected\, maintained\, analysed\, and archived. Using the IMDS\, it is possible to meet the obligations placed on automobile manufacturers\, and thus on their suppliers\, by national and international standards\, laws\, and regulations.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: GS1 and the Wercs on Collecting Information on Chemical Ingredients
DESCRIPTION:Following the June 28 Walmart-RILA webinar\, Carrie Wilkie\, Vice President of Standards Management at GS1 US presented a more technical overview of the standards\, attributes\, and structure of the GS1 Global Data Dictionary. She also discussed some tools and resources available today which may help the IC2 Database Workgroup leverage existing data elements exchanged within supply chains. For example\, the GS1 US Attribute Explorer™ is a technology-agnostic\, browser-based interactive tool that makes it easy to quickly find the 3\,000+ defined attributes in use today that describe a property of a product and how to apply them to a business process. And Kieran Callahan\, Director of Retail Sales for UL discussed standardized data elements used by the Wercs to collect information on chemical ingredients from the perspective of a third-party verification and service provider. He also covered some of the challenges in design and data management for real-time and retrospective information. \nCarrie Wilkie’s slides \nKieran Callahan’s slides

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Walmart and the Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) on Chemical Ingredient Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Retailers need detailed information to handle chemical products safely in accordance with various regulations promulgated by federal agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)\, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)\, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\, as well as similar regulations promulgated by various agencies at a state level. The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) led a multi-stakeholder project to develop GS1 data standards for regulatory attributes of formulated products. In this webinar\, Sue Pifer\, RILA’s Vice President of Compliance\, provided an overview of the project from inception to the current pilot\, including the challenges from a project management perspective—for example\, building a data map to clarify the roles and responsibilities for the envisioned data streams. In addition\, Ashley C. Hall\, Senior Manager of Sustainability for Walmart Stores Inc.\, provided an overview of the process Walmart uses to manage information with UL/Wercs and monitor progress on high priority chemical reduction. Walmart’s policy on sustainable chemistry in consumables\, launched in 2013\, seeks to remove substances of high concern from goods such as personal care\, paper\, cleaning\, pet\, and baby products. The policy also addresses transparency and disclosure as well as a commitment to the U.S. EPA Safer Choice program for Walmart’s private brand products.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Evaluation of the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide
DESCRIPTION:In January 2014\, the IC2 published the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide (the Guide) to assist member states in conducting alternatives assessments. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Guide\, the IC2 initiated a project to conduct alternatives assessments using the three frameworks described in the Guide. Using data provided by the U.S. EPA and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control on alternatives to copper boat paint\, a contractor created a uniform data set evaluating hazard\, performance\, cost and availability\, and exposure for several alternatives to copper boat paint. This data set was used to conduct three\, independent alternatives assessments using each of the frameworks described in the Guide. The objective of this exercise\, however\, was to evaluate the Guide and not to conduct an alternatives assessment of copper boat paint. In this webinar\, Dr. Alex Stone (Washington State Department of Ecology) and Dr. Margaret Whittaker (ToxServices LLC) presented the results of this evaluation project and described recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the Guide and the ability of users to conduct an alternatives assessment. \nWebinar Recording

SUMMARY:IC2 Safer Alternatives Webinar: Considering Technical Feasibility when conducting Alternatives Assessments
DESCRIPTION:In 2010\, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection requested support in determining the availability of safer alternatives to replace the use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)\, and specifically decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE)\, as flame retardants in plastic pallets. \nThe webinar will feature John James of ME DEP\, who will discuss the process they used to identify appropriate technical criteria for this specific application that would allow them to determine if a safer alternative would be technically feasible. The webinar will also feature Bob Kerr and Ken Soltys of Pure Strategies\, the group that did the work to identify alternatives\, about how they determined which alternatives would meet the performance requirements for plastic pallets. \nA copy of the presentation by John James is available for download here \nA copy of the presentation by Pure Strategies is available for download here

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling
DESCRIPTION:The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements\, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling\, transport\, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: \n\nDefining health\, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;\nCreating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and\nCommunicating hazard information\, as well as protective measures\, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).\n\nThe GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national\, regional\, and worldwide level. \nGovernments\, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However\, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted. \nThis IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS\, covering its purpose\, and content. To participate in the Webinar\, you need to pre-register using the online registration form.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Safer Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this web conference will be to provide an overview of the States Alternatives Assessment Wiki. This wiki has been developed by an ad hoc group of state environmental agency staff under the leadership of Pam Eliason\, Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI)\, University of Massachusetts Lowell. \nThe intent of the Safer Alternatives Wiki site is to create a set of flexible\, adaptive steps that follow a shared understanding of what constitutes an evaluation of potentially safer alternatives to a chemical of concern. The goal is not to dictate precisely how to conduct the assessment\, but rather to lay out basic steps generally agreed upon\, and to provide a set of resources to draw from when an alternatives assessment is performed. The Wiki is being developed collaboratively by members of agencies and organizations from the following states: \n\nCalifornia\nConnecticut\nIllinois\nMaine\nMassachusetts\nMichigan\nMinnesota\nNew York\nOregon\nWashington\n\nThe States Alternatives Assessment Protocol Wiki is designed to provide guidance\, examples\, and resources for states interested in conducting or promoting alternatives assessments. \nSpeaker: Pam Eliason\, TURI. Pam will demonstrate the user interface\, navigation\, and content of the Wiki. The web conference will include time for questions and discussion about the development of the Wiki\, what’s left to be done\, and its relationship to the work of the IC2.
