SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: GreenScreen® Assessments of Flame Retardants
DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, the IC2 added GreenScreen® hazard assessments of 18 flame retardants to the Chemical Hazard Assessment Database. These GreenScreens derive from hazard assessments done by EPA’s Design for the Environment Program (DfE). In this webinar\, Lauren Heine\, Clean Production Action’s Co-Director for GreenScreen and Applied Science (and co-author of the GreenScreen for Safer Chemicals) and toxicologist Eric Rosenblum\, who did much of the work to translate DfE’s hazard assessments into GreenScreens\, will focus on one or two examples to provide an overview of the GreenScreen methodology and discuss the translation process from DfE hazard assessment to GreenScreen.

SUMMARY:IC2 Meeting: Chemical Use Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 16\, 2013\nStaples Office Building\nFramingham\, MA \nThe purpose of this IC2 meeting on Chemical Use Disclosure was to provide an opportunity for Members and Supporting Members of the Clearinghouse to hear from members of the Business-NGO Working Group (BizNGO) and the Green Chemistry and Commerce Council (GC3) about the growing effort to increase transparency concerning chemical ingredients in products. The meeting included presentations on current efforts by states to require this kind of disclosure. Most of the meeting was devoted to discussion of ideas and recommendations for improving the current availability of information. \nAgenda topics included: \n\nA presentation on the Washington Department of Ecology system for sharing data on the use of high priority chemicals in children’s products\nAn update on the status of New York State’s efforts on disclosure of chemical ingredients of cleaning products\nA presentation on the Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC) system that covers multi-state reporting on mercury use in products\nDiscussion and recommendations for future disclosure of product ingredients\n\nMeeting participants also brainstormed ideas for IC2’s next steps.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Chemical Use Disclosure
DESCRIPTION:For a number of years\, companies and advocates have been calling for greater transparency in the information available on the use of chemicals in products. In response\, some state environmental agencies have begun to require reporting on chemical use in certain products and to publish the available data. The IC2 held a “Chemical Use Disclosure” webinar to kick-off a series of discussions designed to help shape the future of these information resources. It featured presentations on: \n\nThe newly released Washington Department of Ecology system for searching for information collected from manufacturers on the use of about 60 chemicals of high concern in children’s products; and\nThe Interstate Mercury Education and Reduction Clearinghouse (IMERC) database covering the intentional use of mercury in products.\n\nThe IC2 has posted a PDF version of the presentation and made a video of the webinar and follow-up discussion available on NEWMOA’s YouTube channel. \nThis initiative is made possible with funding support from the John Merck Fund and participation from BizNGO and the GC3.

SUMMARY:IC2 Safer Alternatives Webinar: Considering Technical Feasibility when conducting Alternatives Assessments
DESCRIPTION:In 2010\, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection requested support in determining the availability of safer alternatives to replace the use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs)\, and specifically decabromodiphenyl ether (decaBDE)\, as flame retardants in plastic pallets. \nThe webinar will feature John James of ME DEP\, who will discuss the process they used to identify appropriate technical criteria for this specific application that would allow them to determine if a safer alternative would be technically feasible. The webinar will also feature Bob Kerr and Ken Soltys of Pure Strategies\, the group that did the work to identify alternatives\, about how they determined which alternatives would meet the performance requirements for plastic pallets. \nA copy of the presentation by John James is available for download here \nA copy of the presentation by Pure Strategies is available for download here

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling
DESCRIPTION:The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements\, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling\, transport\, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: \n\nDefining health\, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;\nCreating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and\nCommunicating hazard information\, as well as protective measures\, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).\n\nThe GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national\, regional\, and worldwide level. \nGovernments\, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However\, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted. \nThis IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS\, covering its purpose\, and content. To participate in the Webinar\, you need to pre-register using the online registration form.

SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Safer Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this web conference will be to provide an overview of the States Alternatives Assessment Wiki. This wiki has been developed by an ad hoc group of state environmental agency staff under the leadership of Pam Eliason\, Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI)\, University of Massachusetts Lowell. \nThe intent of the Safer Alternatives Wiki site is to create a set of flexible\, adaptive steps that follow a shared understanding of what constitutes an evaluation of potentially safer alternatives to a chemical of concern. The goal is not to dictate precisely how to conduct the assessment\, but rather to lay out basic steps generally agreed upon\, and to provide a set of resources to draw from when an alternatives assessment is performed. The Wiki is being developed collaboratively by members of agencies and organizations from the following states: \n\nCalifornia\nConnecticut\nIllinois\nMaine\nMassachusetts\nMichigan\nMinnesota\nNew York\nOregon\nWashington\n\nThe States Alternatives Assessment Protocol Wiki is designed to provide guidance\, examples\, and resources for states interested in conducting or promoting alternatives assessments. \nSpeaker: Pam Eliason\, TURI. Pam will demonstrate the user interface\, navigation\, and content of the Wiki. The web conference will include time for questions and discussion about the development of the Wiki\, what’s left to be done\, and its relationship to the work of the IC2.
