SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling
DESCRIPTION:The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements\, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling\, transport\, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to: \n\nDefining health\, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;\nCreating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and\nCommunicating hazard information\, as well as protective measures\, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).\n\nThe GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national\, regional\, and worldwide level. \nGovernments\, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However\, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted. \nThis IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS\, covering its purpose\, and content. SUMMARY:IC2 Webinar: Safer Alternatives
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of this web conference will be to provide an overview of the States Alternatives Assessment Wiki. This wiki has been developed by an ad hoc group of state environmental agency staff under the leadership of Pam Eliason\, Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI)\, University of Massachusetts Lowell. \nThe intent of the Safer Alternatives Wiki site is to create a set of flexible\, adaptive steps that follow a shared understanding of what constitutes an evaluation of potentially safer alternatives to a chemical of concern. The goal is not to dictate precisely how to conduct the assessment\, but rather to lay out basic steps generally agreed upon\, and to provide a set of resources to draw from when an alternatives assessment is performed. The Wiki is being developed collaboratively by members of agencies and organizations from the following states: \n\nCalifornia\nConnecticut\nIllinois\nMaine\nMassachusetts\nMichigan\nMinnesota\nNew York\nOregon\nWashington\n\nThe States Alternatives Assessment Protocol Wiki is designed to provide guidance\, examples\, and resources for states interested in conducting or promoting alternatives assessments. \nSpeaker: Pam Eliason\, TURI. Pam will demonstrate the user interface\, navigation\, and content of the Wiki. The web conference will include time for questions and discussion about the development of the Wiki\, what’s left to be done\, and its relationship to the work of the IC2.
