IC2 Webinar: Evaluation of the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide

In January 2014, the IC2 published the IC2 Alternatives Assessment Guide (the Guide) to assist member states in conducting alternatives assessments. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the Guide, the IC2 initiated a project to conduct alternatives assessments using the three frameworks described in the Guide. Using data provided by the U.S. EPA and the California Department of Toxic Substances Control on alternatives to copper boat paint, a contractor created a uniform data set evaluating hazard, performance, cost and availability, and exposure for several alternatives to copper boat paint. This data set was used to conduct three, independent alternatives assessments using each of the frameworks described in the Guide. The objective of this exercise, however, was to evaluate the Guide and not to conduct an alternatives assessment of copper boat paint. In this webinar, Dr. Alex Stone (Washington State Department of Ecology) and Dr. Margaret Whittaker (ToxServices LLC) presented the results of this evaluation project and described recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the Guide and the ability of users to conduct an alternatives assessment.
