IC2 Webinar: Introduction to the Globally Harmonized System of Chemical Classification & Labeling

February 24, 2010 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

The “Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS)” addresses the classification of chemicals by types of hazard and proposes harmonized hazard communication elements, including labels and safety data sheets. It aims at ensuring that information on physical hazards and toxicity from chemicals be available in order to enhance the protection of human health and the environment during the handling, transport, and use of these chemicals. It is a logical and comprehensive approach to:

  • Defining health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals;
  • Creating classification processes that use available data on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria; and
  • Communicating hazard information, as well as protective measures, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

The GHS also provides a basis for harmonization of rules and regulations on chemicals at national, regional, and worldwide level.

Governments, regional institutions and international organizations are the primary audiences for the GHS. However, it also contains sufficient context and guidance for those in industry that will ultimately be implementing the requirements that have been adopted.

This IC2 Webinar will introduce participants in the Clearinghouse to the GHS, covering its purpose, and content. To participate in the Webinar, you need to pre-register using the online registration form.
