Accountable Company: PRISM term for the company responsible for reporting according to Amara’s Law (e.g. manufacturer).
Amara’s Law: Minnesota Statute §116.943 enacted in 2023. This law bans PFAS chemicals in specific products for sale in the state of Minnesota and also requires reporting of intentionally added PFAS chemicals in product components for sale in the state of Minnesota.
Annual Report: Only required if there are changes to the information reported in the previous year. No reporting fee is required.
Authorized Representative: A person designated by the manufacturer to report on behalf of the manufacturer (e.g. trade group or consultant).
Billing Contact: Person employed by the manufacturer that is required to report that is responsible for all billing related to required fees for submitted reports.
Brand Name: A name, symbol, word or mark that identifies a product and attributes the product to the owner of the brand.
CASRN: Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number, which are numerical identifiers assigned to chemical substances and serve as a universal and unambiguous way to identify specific chemical compounds preventing confusion from multiple chemical names.
Chemical Identifying Number (PFAS Identifier): a Chemical Abstracts Service Registry number (CASRN), European Community (EC) number, United States Environmental Protection Agency Toxic Substances Control Act accession number, or other unique alphanumeric or numeric identifier used in commerce, in research, and by governments to cross-reference all information available on a particular chemical. A particular chemical may have more than one chemical identifying number.
Chemical Name: A systematic nomenclature that follows the internationally recognized conventions established by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)
Chemical Subclass: The subclass of chemicals a PFAS chemical is assigned to. Used in PRISM to classify a chemical when Trade Secret status has been requested and approved.
Disclosure ID: Alphanumeric identification number automatically assigned to reports by PRISM upon successful submission
DUNS Number: A unique nine-digit identifier for businesses assigned by Dun and Bradstreet.
EC number: European Community number, which is a unique seven-digit identifier for chemical substances on the European market and used for regulatory purposes.
HTS: Harmonized Tariff Schedule, which is a system of codes used to classify imported goods and determine customs duties.
IC2: Interstate Chemicals Clearinghouse
Initial Report: Required for all manufacturers that offer products containing PFAS for sale in the state of Minnesota. This report requires payment of the initial reporting fee.
Manufacturer: The person that creates or produces a product or whose brand name is affixed to the product. In the case of a product imported into the United States, manufacturer includes the importer or first domestic distributor of the product if the person that manufactured or assembled the product or whose brand name is affixed to the product does not have a presence in the United States.

NAICS Code: North American Industry Classification System, which is a six-digit number used by governments in North American to classify businesses based on their primary activity.
NEWMOA: Northeast Waste Management Officials’ Association
Numeric Product Code: A numeric code that a manufacturer assigns to a product being reported and that is recognizable to purchasers on labels, listings, invoices, or receipts, including a universal product code (UPC), stock keeping unit (SKU), harmonized tariff schedule (HTS) code, or other numeric code assigned to the product.
PFAS: Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (forever chemicals)
PFAS Function: The explicit purpose or role served by PFAS when intentionally incorporated at any stage in the process of preparing a product or its constituent components for sale, offered for sale, or distribution for sale.
PFAS Range: The concentration range in parts per million of the PFAS chemical in the product component.
PRISM: PFAS Reporting Information System for Manufacturers
Product: An item manufactured, assembled, packaged, or otherwise prepared for sale to consumers, including but not limited to its product components, sold or distributed for personal, residential, commercial, or industrial use, including for use in making other products.
Product Component: An identifiable component of a product, regardless of whether the manufacturer of the product is the manufacturer of the component.
Product Model: A specific version or design of a product that is marketed or sold under a shared product name, sharing core components and performance characteristics with other versions of the same product, but differing by design, features, or configuration. Product models represent distinct variants within a broader product line, where each model can be uniquely identified for reporting and compliance purposes.
Public Contact: Person employed by the manufacturer that is required to report that can answer questions from the public and regulating agencies about the information in submitted required reports.
Report ID: Numerical identification number automatically assigned to draft reports in PRISM.
Reporting Contact: Person employed by the manufacturer or their representative who submitted the required report.
Reporting Period: The calendar year for which a report is required (ex. 2025 reporting period is January 1 to December 31 for the 2025 year).
SIC Code: Standard Industrial Classification, which is a four-digit number used to classify businesses based on their primary activity.
SKU: Stock Keeping Unit, which is a unique alphanumeric code assigned to a product for inventory management.
TOC: Total Organic Carbon
TSCARN: Toxic Substances Control Act Registration Number, which is assigned by the Environmental Protection Agency when a CAS RN does not exist for a chemical covered by the Act due to confidential status.
UPC: Universal Product Code, which is a 12-digit bar code used for uniquely identifying consumer products, most commonly in North America.
Updated Report: Voluntary update of reported information for the reporting period. No reporting fee is required.
